Stockholm North Cemetery
Three SecondsStockholm North Cemetery is where Ewert Grens finally arrives after repeatedly setting out to visit his late wife’s grave and turning back. At its Gate 1 entrance, he manages only a few steps before grief overwhelms him; the cemetery remains both a real destination and a promise he cannot yet fulfill.
Setting and Arrival
After another restless night, Grens drives through Stockholm in the early hours. At about half past three, he finds himself at the Udine bridge, having been on his way to the nursing home he is no longer allowed to visit, and to the window where his wife no longer sat. He turns around and drives back toward the city’s houses and people. He has not been to the cemetery before, and had not even known he was heading there.
The Unfinished Visit
Grens reaches the southern entrance, Gate 1. His legs feel weak, and pressure builds in his chest; after beginning to walk, he stops only a few steps in, unable to go on. The dawn is gentle, with sunlight falling on the graves, grass, and trees, but he does not reach his wife’s stone. He returns to the car and drives back into the city as Stockholm North Cemetery recedes in the rearview mirror.
Significance in Grens’s Grief
The visit ends not with a completed farewell but with the possibility of another attempt. Grens tells himself that perhaps next time he will find where her stone is and walk all the way there. The cemetery gives physical form to the distance between wanting to mourn and being able to face the grave: even after reaching its entrance, he leaves without finding it. His repeated promise of a next time keeps the encounter open, like the grief it exposes.
